Annual Member Banquet

This years Banquet was a complete success! Over 100 Chamber Members and their families enjoyed a delightful evening at the Annual Chamber Banquet on Friday, April 22, held at Midland Valley High School. Welcoming Remarks were given by Ms. Debra Atkinson, Mr. Heath Wheat then gave the Pledge of Allegiance. Then Mr. Rodney Ingle blessed the meal. The dinner was very good and catered by Celebrations Unlimited. Ms. Debra Atkinson gave the Chambers Annual Report. Mr. Barry Glover gave Recognition of Directors and Special Guests.


Youth of the Year Introduced by Ms. Lawana Mckenzie - Heath Wheat, senior at Midland valley High School was named 2006 Youth of the Year at the Midland Valley Area Chamber of Commerce annual member banquet.  Heath is the son of Jeff and Kim Wheat of Langley, SC.  Heath gives tirelessly of this time and energy to his school and his community.  Heath has been involved in various leadership roles.  At Midland Valley High School, he served on Student Council for each of the four years that he has been there.  He was class president in the tenth grade and the eleventh grade.  Heath currently serves as Student Body President and has been a member of the School Improvement Council for the past three years.  Heath has served his community and his church in a variety of endeavors.  For the past four years, he has worked with World Changers Ministry and he has done volunteer work at Helping Hands.  Heath plans to attend USCA and then further his education to become a pediatrician. 
Congratulations to Heath Wheat, 2006 Youth of the Year.


The Scholarship Presentation Introduced by Mr. Chris Verenes and was presented to Midland Valley High School Senior Youth of the Year Mr. Heath Wheat.


Citizen of the Year  Introduced by Ms.Lawana McKenzie was given to the very much deserving Gloria Busch Johnson, a longtime community volunteer who serves as Executive Director for the Midland Valley Chamber of Commerce was named 2006 Citizen of the Year at the Midland Valley Area Chamber of Commerce annual member banquet.  Gloria entered South Carolina State College in Orangeburg in 1959.  Gloria served as a prison warden in Connecticut and was featured along with Robert French in the national publication ”Guide Posts”.  Gloria served as Dean of Student Services and Vice-President of Development at Aiken County Technical College until 1995 when she retired.  However, her support of the College has only become stronger.  In March 2006, Gloria was reappointed to the South Carolina Board for the Licensure of Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists and Psycho-educational Specialist currently serving as president.  She was first appointed by Governor Campbell and reappointed by Governors Beasley, Hodges, and now Sanford.  She as served as Trustee At-Large on Aiken Electric Cooperative’s Board of Trustees since May 1991.  She has been past president of the Midland Valley Lions Club, member of AGLOW International, Aiken County Emergency Services Committee, Red Hats Society and attends the Fountain of Life Fellowship Church.
Her greatest accomplishment is her son, Mitch, and a beautiful granddaughter.  Congratulations to Gloria Busch Johnson, 2006 Citizen of the Year.                             View Tribute To Gloria Busch Johnson 1942-2006

Awards Day


On May 16, 2006, the Midland Valley Area Chamber of Commerce awarded two $1000 scholarships at the Midland Valley High School Awards Day.  These scholarships were awarded to rising seniors who are attending Aiken Technical College and University of South Carolina, Aiken in the fall.

The Aiken Technical College Scholarship was awarded to Samantha Phillips. Samantha plans to attend Aiken Technical College in the fall and pursue a degree in elementary education with a minor in psychology.

The University of South Carolina, Aiken scholarship was awarded to Thomas Carney.  Thomas plans to attend University of South Carolina, Aiken in the fall and pursue a degree in education.  Thomas would like to become a U. S. History Teacher.

Thanks to all of our business and community members who support Chamber activities and made these scholarships possible.
